What is 'special' treatment?

Section 3 of the Guardianship and Administration Act 1995 and Regulation 7 of the Guardianship and Administration Regulations 1997 provide the definition of 'Special' Treatment.

 
6 types of procedures are defined as 'special' treatment. They are:

  1. Sterilisation (a treatment that is intended or reasonably likely to render the person infertile);

  2. Termination of a Pregnancy;

  3. Donor Transplant Surgery (removal of tissue for transplantation);

  4. Treatment with a drug of addiction for more than 10 days out of 30 (except with palliative care);

  5. Psychosurgery; and

  6. Any treatment involving the use of mechanical, chemical, physical or other aversive stimulus.
